Wally Fresh has extended forgiveness on the previously excommunicated Johann Tetzel and Pope Leo X."It has become clear that the Grace of God, so prevalent in the Universal Lutheran Church, is proclaimed for even the worst of sinners. It is in that spirit that Mr's Tetzel and X become poster children for the magnitude of God's awesome and all consuming forgiveness."

A controversial move to be sure, but one scholar noted, "The Lutheran Church was birthed from controversy."
